With abundant wind and sun, Montana is well suited to shift to renewable energy, and even to be a renewable energy exporter, while creating good jobs and tax revenues. I take my moral, religious, and scientific stewardship responsibilities seriously, and will work to make Montana carbon neutral by 2035.
The science is clear. We must act with urgency to become carbon neutral by 2035. That means 100% clean energy, across the entire economy. It’s ambitious, but we can do it. And for the planet and our kids, we have to do it.
We must have laws and regulations that rapidly draw down carbon and methane emissions and ramp up energy efficiency everywhere. We must create incentives for energy producers to transition to renewable energy, for builders to create energy efficient homes, for businesses and homeowners to increase energy efficiency, for farmers and ranchers to shift to carbon neutral practices, and much more.
We must make bold investments in innovative technologies. Our goals must be ambitious, and staged deadlines must be strictly enforced to demonstrate measurable progress.
In the course of this transition, workers must be protected. We will provide training and incentives for workers displaced by the transition to get good jobs in the new industries created.
We must ensure that vulnerable communities are given equitable protections and are granted access to cost-effective clean-energy options.
We must hold companies accountable for cleaning up their climate pollution.
The State of Washington has enacted legislation which will prohibit our current dirty energy from being exported to their State, jeopardizing the taxes Montana collects by exporting this energy. Montana’s fiscal health depends on generating clean energy which can be exported (and taxed).
We must speak with the moral authority of stewardship and can bring along those who are frightened by the economic and cultural consequences of change.
